Junior Cycle 2021

03-March-21

Dear Students, Parents/Guardians,

We hope everyone is keeping well during these school closures. To anyone who has experienced loss during this time our thoughts are with you. We are delighted to have some of our students back in school and hope that the remaining year groups will be back with us shortly.

Following an announcement from the Department of Education and Skills on Wednesday, 17th February, we were informed that the Junior Cycle examinations will not run in 2021.

While we are awaiting further guidance, we anticipate that the that Junior Cycle Certification 2021 will consist of A School Report setting out the learning achievements of students in Junior Cycle.

Ballymakenny College – Junior Cycle School Report 2021

Following consultation with teachers, the Board of Management of Ballymakenny College have decided that the following elements will form the basis of the school report on student achievement for Junior Cycle 2021.

Subject to further guidance from the Department of Education and Skills, student achievement and learning will be graded on a written report consisting of two elements.

  1. 40% of the overall grade per subject will be based on coursework (including practical work, orals etc.) and engagement throughout all of 3rd year in each subject.
  1. 60% of the overall grade per subject will be based on class assessments up to a maximum of 2 x 1-hour lessons over the period 17th - 27th May. These assessments will comprise of subject content as decided by subject departments and will be communicated to students by their subject teachers in the coming weeks. These assessments will serve as a basis to assess subject content that has not been assessed meaningfully heretofore, due to school closures, and the cancelled mock examinations. However, the focus of such assessments will be narrower in nature than the junior cycle examinations. Students will be guided by their teachers in terms of areas to study, unlike the state examinations which are all-encompassing in relation to subject curricula over the three-year junior cycle.

This report will be completed by teachers in early June and will be issued to students and parents/guardians as soon as possible thereafter.

Students will receive a Ballymakenny College Junior Cycle 2021 Report in place of the SEC Certificate normally received by students in September.

We hope that this information gives clarity to all our third-year students, parents, and guardians.

Please stay well and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.

Yours Sincerely

Alan Mynes
