Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope you and your families are all staying well and enjoying these last few weeks of our summer holidays.

As you are aware the Department of Education recently issued guidelines on procedures to be undertaken for the reopening of schools. While we welcome these guidelines there is still clarification required in a number of areas.

The return to school will be somewhat different this year as we all get accustomed to the 'new norm'. Increased safety measures and social distancing will be essential to ensure the safety of pupils and staff and much work will be required in this regard over the coming weeks.

We can provide clarity however in the following areas;

  1. There will be no canteen services on our immediate return to school. Students must bring in their own lunch;
  2. The HUB area will not be available for use on our immediate return. Weather permitting we will be asking students to remain outside for lunch breaks, so please remember to bring your school jacket with you;
  3. There will be no lockers provided on our immediate return;
  4. If, due to the current restrictions, planned trips and excursions need to be cancelled, we will issue parents/guardians with a full refund;
  5. Students will be required to wear full school uniform;
  6. There will be no formal PE classes on our immediate return. Students will still be timetabled for PE which will take place outside (weather dependent) or in classrooms;
  7. There will be no extra- curricular activities taking place after school;
  8. If parents/guardians need to meet any staff member, an appointment must be made in advance to arrange this;
  9. Students will have a greater responsibility now to maintain a clean environment in their classrooms and in general purpose areas;
  10. Students entering new programmes such as Transition Year and 5th Year will need to purchase new copies and stationary. All other year groups won’t need to purchase additional copies etc. unless required. Please speak to your son/daughter about this;
  11. All lockers have been cleared out over the summer and the contents have been disposed of.

The Department is conscious that there may be some pupils for whom return to school at the end of August may not be appropriate because the relevant public health guidelines indicate they are ‘at very high risk’. If this is the case with your son/daughter, can you please get in touch with the school as soon as possible.

Can all students (1st – 6th year) please check that their iPads are functioning properly before we return to school.

In relation to 5th year book rental, the facility for payment is open on VS. If you have difficulties accessing VS or are experiencing difficulties with payments, please get in touch with the school about this. Payments on VS should be completed on a PC or iPad as payments on mobile phones can be problematic.

This is a challenging time for everyone in education but I think we can all agree that our students need to be back in school. School is an important element of wellbeing for all students. It will be a very different experience for all of us but we hope it is temporary. During this period of time we need everyone’s cooperation for a safe and healthy return to school.
