Junior Cycle

16-February-17

Our Junior Cycle Programme

Junior Cycle students in Ballymakenny College complete up to ten subjects at Junior Cycle level.

All students study the following core subjects:

  • English, Irish, Mathematics, History, Geography, Science, Modern Foreign Language, SPHE, CSPE, Ethical Education.

All students in First Year undertake a "Taster" option of six optional subjects in their first term. Students then select 2 Optional subjects to continue studying:

  • Music, Technology, Materials Technology Wood, Technical Graphics, Home Economics, Art, Business Studies.

At the end of the Taster Options students complete a Subject Options form with their parent(s)/guardian and choose their subjects in order of preference. Students often decide to pick a subject because their friend has chosen the same subject. We would prefer if students pick the subject that they enjoy and participate most effectively in.

*While every effort will be made to facilitate students in their choice of subject, your child's first preference cannot be guaranteed.

Junior Cycle CBA Information

CBA means Classroom Based Assessment

Students will undertake two Classroom-Based Assessments facilitated by their teacher, one in second year and one in third year. Classroom-Based Assessments in all subjects will be specified at a common level.

Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) have been introduced to allow students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts and skills and their ability to apply them in ways that may not be possible in an externally assessed examination. They will be used in the assessment of learning in subjects and in short courses. Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs) will be assessed by the students’ teachers and reported on to students and parents/guardians during junior cycle and in the JCPA.
